Eastman Guitars
which guitar is best?
I’m getting my 13yo an acoustic/electric guitar for christmas. She has been playing for a couple years and has her own preferences on which one she’s like but the one she really wants is out of our price-range.
These are the brands I’m looking into:
Eastman
Johnson
Takamine
Fender
Ovation
Her favorite is the Eastman AC112CE but $450+ is a little steep for us this year especially since it would be a student instrument.
I want her to be able to give her as much edge as possible in being successful at playing for as economic a price as we can find.
So, to all you guitar aficionados out there which do you thing would be the best model for her?
Ok I have a subquestion to this… daughter prefers guitars without the cut-out but it seems like this would be useful for reaching some notes. Will she want this feature later on?
A couple years of sticking with it is pretty encouraging…
I’d try to get her a nice sounding instrument… at least something with a solid spruce top at this stage (anything that says “spruce top” and not “solid spruce top” is plywood). An instrument that sounds good and plays well tends to inspire musicians and help them progress more quickly. I started to learn much more quickly when a guitarist friend of mine finally convinced me to buy decent gear.
Could you afford around $300.00 for something like a Fender CD140SCE ?
Stay away from Johnson… not familiar with Eastman… couldn’t go too wrong with the others.
Paying a little extra to have a pro go over a guitar and do any necessary fine-tuning and adjustments isn’t a bad idea… maybe after a little break-in period of playing it as-is. Guitars in this price-range are generally set up to be playable, but not perfect at the factory.
EDIT:
The cutout definitely makes playing easier. Some people prefer no cutout for a fuller tone and better projection, but you’ll find most acoustic electrics are made with the cutout. Designs without the cutout are more popular in 100% acoustic guitars where the best unplugged projection is more important.
